Anchoring policies in Formentera

Anchoring policies in Formentera

We share this news that comes from Pitiusa de Ecología, entrusted undertaking monitoring and anchoring assistance in the area of Illetas beach and Es Calo des Oli.

Pitiusa de Ecologia is proud to announce that once again, after three consecutive and successful campaigns, the Balearic Government has awarded the anchoring assistance service concession to our company for this coming 2016 summer. Our goals are to continue building awareness and to assist the yachting industry during visits in Illetas, Formentera. Visitors can have peace of mind by helping us preserve our crystal clear waters.

The anchoring service will be available daily from 1st June to 30th September between 10.00 and 20.00 hours, providing assistance in the north-western tip of Formentera. We operate on two grey Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) to ensure monitoring and assistance. We suggest that large yachts report in advance to improve daily spatial planning.

We take the opportunity to remind seafarers that Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds in Ibiza and Formentera became a World Heritage Site, included in the UNESCO. Such meadows are part of the natural beauty of our islands, providing us with crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches. Unfortunately, Posidonia oceanica has suffered deterioration due to uncontrolled anchoring and nearshore sewage disposals.

It is Balearic Law that all vessels must anchor on sandy bottoms and that both the anchor and the chain must not touch or damage the seagrass. Please consult the “Plan Rector de Uso y Gestión (PRUG)” – published in the BOIB num 196, dated 31-12-2005 article 117 C (http://boib.caib.es/pdf/2005196/mp141.pdf) for further information.

Please also consult https://ideib.caib.es/posidonia/ being a usefull tool which maps Posidonia seagrass areas around Ibiza and Formentera.

On our behalf, as marine professionals, we are committed to progress in marine park management and welcome visitors from around the world.
